Coffee pads
66Coffee Pads
Coffee pads are small round coffee filters with approximately 7/8 gram ground coffee, they are special made for coffee pad machines. On the upside they are flat and on the backside they are a little bit rounded. Coffee pads are available in many different flavors from different brands.
History of the Coffee Pad
It all started in the Netherlands; in 2001 Douwe Egberts in cooperation with Philips introduced the Senseo pads and the Senseo Coffee machine. Douwe Egberts invented the coffee pads and Philips worked on the coffee machine. This close cooperation between two cooperation became a trend after the great success of Senseo coffee. Another great example is the introduction of the Beertender by Heineken en Krups.
The name Coffee Pad
When the pad was invented in the Netherlands it was name the 'koffiepad'. "Koffie" is the Dutch word for coffeee and 'pad' is the English word for cushion. After the success in the Netherlands the coffee was also introduced in other countries. Some call it the cofeepad while other call it the Coffee Pod, where pod is the word for capsule.
Tea Pod
In 2006 the Tea Pod was introduced for the Senseo Machine, it was called the "T-pad". It was a cooperation between Philips and Pickwick. A special Teapad holder must be used to make the tea. The unique thing about it is that the tea is immediately ready. After this success Philips also created special pads to make chocolate milk in the Senseo Machine.
Espresso pads
The Senseo pads are inspired by the "easy serving espresso pod" for making Espresso. The ESE Espressopads are created over 10 years ago by Illy. They own the patent for this invention; they don't use the patent against competition but for keeping perfect quality for Espresso Pods. Once a company creates an espresso pod which satisfies the requirements they can get a free patent. In 2005 Douwe Egberts got the European patent to create Senseo Coffee pads and they sold the rights to create pads to other companies. The patent was voided on 31 August 2006 because Douwe Egberts wasn't innovative.

Never knew that about coffee pods actually being "pads." Just to clarify, I believe that the espresso pod was originally invented by an American. The Italians bought the patent and started production of the espresso pods.
